Probably a name unfamiliar to most, however a sparkling talent nonetheless. Nuno Mendes is a Portuguese left back who is currently on loan at Paris Saint Germain but his home club is Sporting CP, who play in the Portuguese league. He first came to people’s attention last season where he played a vital role in helping Sporting win the Portuguese league for the first time in 19 years. He was also selected in the Portuguese national team squad for the Euro 2020, already playing 8 times for his country.
Definitely not known for his goalscoring record, only scoring once so far in his professional career, he is an old school fullback. Having watched him play a few times in the Primeira Liga (Portuguese League), and more recently for PSG, it is clear that this 19 year old has a lot of talent, especially when it comes to his defensive work. He has a big burst of acceleration which helps him defend better against speedy wingers in particular.
As well as helping his team win the league title, on a personal achievement level he was part of the Primeira Liga’s team of the year at the end of the 2020-2021 season, his first full season in professional football, which is an amazing achievement! Although he is returning to Sporting CP at the end of this season, I do not think it will be very long until we see this young man get a big transfer to another European team.
