Having played the majority of his young footballing life at the youth and reserve teams for Mainz, Burkardt currently plays for the senior team and has been playing as their starting striker this season.
There is no doubt on why Bo Svensson, his manager, has decided to play the young 21 year old up front for Mainz. He has been causing defences major problems this season and has been tearing it up in the German Bundesliga, the top flight of German football. The young German player has already scored 5 goals in 11 games so far, which is a great strike rate for a player who plays for a low scoring club. He also has 3 goals in 2 games in the Pokal cup. Mainz are well known for being a team who concede a lot of goals and sit back to try and defend. However this season with the help of young Burkardt has helped them improve and are currently 7th in the table. He is also the 7th highest scorer in the Bundesliga which is an incredible achievement considering he is playing alongside the goal machines that are Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland!
He is a very pacey and aggressive striker who seems to have all the attributes to be a world class striker. He never gives up on the ball and a few of his goals this season have come from harassing defenders and then coolly slotting the ball home. His finishing also seems very good, having one of the best shot accuracy percentages in the entire Bundesliga. I expect him to carry on this great form and be the new talisman for the Mainz team. I am sure this will not be the last we hear of this 21 year old striker!
